Series.
DAWN
provides
semiannual
estimates
of the
number
of
drug-related
visits
to
hospital
emergency
departments
based on
a
nationally
representative
sample
of
short-stay
general
hospitals
located
throughout
the
coterminous
United
States.
Included
are
persons
6 years
and
older
who were
treated
in the
hospital's
emergency
department
with a
presenting
problem
that was
induced
by or
related
to the
non-medical
use of a
legal
drug or
any use
of an
illegal
drug
that was
taken
due to
dependence,
suicide
attempt
or
gesture,
or
psychic
effects.
DAWN
also
collects
information
on
drug-related
deaths
from
selected
medical
examiner
offices.
Emergency
room
estimates
are
produced
for 21
large
metropolitan
areas
and for
the
nation.
Drug-related
deaths
data are
produced
for more
than 40
metropolitan
areas.
The
dataset
contains
demographics,
drug,
and
reason
for
visit
(e.g.,
overdose).
DAWN is
sponsored
by the
Office
of
Applied
Studies
at the
Substance
Abuse
and
Mental
Health
Services
Administration.
